What do you need to train your puppy?

- A treat pouch or treat bag
- A soft collar: Something that is comfortable around their neck, doesn’t pull on their hair, and doesn’t fall off easily.
- A harness: One that doesn’t pull or tighten on your puppy when they walk is fab. Golden Retrievers are strong (you’ll see) so a harness will be a good friend when you’re teaching them lead walking.
- A 2 metre training lead: Long enough to give your Golden Retriever puppy space to sniff the flowers, but too long so they wander off into someone’s picnic.
- Treats. It can be natural treats like boiled chicken breast cute into small pieces, or bought from pet stores. Probably the best part of selecting puppy training treat flavours available is seeing which they like best. Frantic tail-wagging and outstandingly widened eyes are usually a good indication of this.
- Two identical toys: Great for swaps! The name says it all…your Golden Retriever puppy will love retrieving, so identical toys will be great for all the games.
House training is one of the first things you’ll need to teach your puppy. Where to start?......
The key is for you and your puppy to get into a good, daily routine and stick to the training.
TOILET TRAINING
Every puppy is different. From our research and experience, we know it can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 8 months to fully train your puppy depending on your circumstances and your puppy’s ability to learn quick.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR PUPPY NEEDS THE TOILET?
Learning to recognise when your puppy needs the toilet is essential when it comes to training your puppy to do their business where you’d like them to do it. Common signs that your puppy needs the toilet include:
- Sniffing the floor
- Circling
- Looking restless
- Going into a room or to a space they’ve previously been to the toilet in
- Wandering away from family
- Whimpering
- Running to the door
If you see any of these signs, accompany your puppy to wherever they are being trained to do their business and praise them if they relieve themselves in the correct location.
TOILET TRAINING "EASY PEASY STEP BY STEP"
1. Establish a consistance toilet spot
Ideally, this should be an outdoor space like a back garden. If , however, you don’t have any outdoor space because you live in an apartment, using a real grass dog toilet like artificial grass with tray (Pet Dog Toilet) can be a great way to potty train your puppy while still encouraging them to look for natural spaces to go potty.
2. Create a toilet training schedule
Doing things at the same time everyday is crucial. Generally, a puppy potty training schedule will include toilet breaks:
- first thing in the morning
- after meal times
- after playtimes
- after visitors
- last thing at night before you and your puppy go to bed.
